What the honeymoon actually costs, before you book anything

Honeymoons are the line most couples estimate last and overspend on first. The Honeymoon Budget Calculator takes your destination, trip length, and travel style and returns a realistic total across flights, accommodation, food, activities, and the extras that appear after arrival.

Enter your destination tier, number of nights, and preferred style, and the tool returns a per-day and per-trip figure you can hold against your wedding budget before either is committed.

How the estimate is built

Flights. The least controllable line. Domestic round-trip runs $300–$700 per person; Caribbean and Mexico $450–$900; Europe $800–$1,600; Asia or Oceania $1,200–$2,400. Booking eleven to four months out is the reliable window.

Accommodation. $150–$400 per night for a mid-range resort or boutique hotel, $500–$1,200 for overwater, luxury, or safari accommodation, and $80–$200 for apartments and guesthouses.

Food and drink. $80–$200 per person per day, or considerably less if breakfast is included and you eat where locals eat.

Activities. $50–$200 per person per day for diving, tours, spa, and excursions.

Getting around and incidentals. Transfers, visa or entry fees, travel insurance, tips, and sim or data costs.

Real 2026 benchmarks

Domestic long weekend, 4 nights: $1,800–$3,200 per couple.

Mexico or Caribbean, 7 nights, all-inclusive: $4,000–$7,000 per couple including flights.

Italy or Greece, 10 nights: $7,000–$12,000 per couple.

Maldives or Bora Bora, 7 nights: $9,000–$18,000 per couple.

Japan or New Zealand, 14 nights: $9,000–$16,000 per couple.

If your figure sits below these ranges, the usual reason is that flights, transfers, or daily food were left out rather than genuinely reduced.

Keeping the honeymoon inside the wedding budget

Fix the honeymoon number before you fix the guest list, not after. It is far easier to hold a destination than to explain to a hundred guests why the headcount changed. A honeymoon at $6,000 equals roughly 33 guests at $180 each, which is a useful way to frame the trade.

Build the trip in two halves: a paid-in-advance portion you book before the wedding, and a daily spending pot for the trip itself. Booking flights, accommodation, and insurance early locks the bulk of the cost when your attention is still available. Set aside the daily pot as cash or a separate account so it does not compete with final vendor payments in the last month.

If the budget is tight, shorten the trip rather than downgrade every element. Ten nights at a good mid-range hotel beats five nights at a luxury resort, and the cost difference is smaller than the experience difference.

Frequently asked questions

Should we register for a honeymoon fund instead of gifts?

Yes, and it is now the most common registry item. Be explicit about what it funds — a dinner, an excursion, a night away — because guests respond better to a specific experience than an open cash request.

How much contingency should a honeymoon budget include?

Fifteen percent. Currency movement, a change of plans, and a single unexpected transfer fee are all normal.

Is travel insurance worth it for a honeymoon?

Yes, and more so than for ordinary trips. It covers cancellation if the wedding date moves and medical costs abroad, which can reach five figures.

Should we travel immediately after the wedding?

Waiting a few days reduces cost and fatigue. Off-peak mid-week departures are often materially cheaper than the Sunday after a Saturday wedding.
