Explore the Magic Tools →Bridal sizing is not street sizing
Almost every bride is at least one size larger in a wedding dress than in her everyday clothes, and the surprise is common enough that boutiques warn about it up front. The reason is not vanity sizing in reverse. Bridal charts are built from body measurements with construction allowance already accounted for, whereas ready-to-wear is cut from garment measurements with ease built in, so the number on the label describes a different thing entirely.
Enter your bust, waist and hip measurements in inches or centimetres and the calculator converts them across fifteen bridal brands at once, showing which of your three measurements drives the recommendation and flagging any brand where you sit between sizes.
The largest-measurement rule
Bridal charts are not read the way an ordinary chart is. Each listed size states the maximum body measurement that fits into it, so you arrive at three separate answers rather than one.
Work out a size from your bust, another from your waist and a third from your hips, then take the largest of the three. Rounding up when you land between sizes is industry convention rather than a safety margin, because a gown can be taken in and generally cannot be let out. If your bust and hips point at sizes two or more apart, the tool flags it as a split size and explains what boutiques do about it.
Why fifteen brands instead of one chart
A single chart would be faster and considerably less useful. Bridal labels cut to their own blocks, and the differences are large enough to change what you order.
Vera Wang runs slightly smaller than the industry average, so many brides need a size up from what a standard chart suggests. Pronovias is a Spanish house working from European sizing, and its US equivalents run one to two sizes larger than the American average. Maggie Sottero sits at the industry-standard fit, which makes it a useful reference point, and Rebecca Ingram is the same family's budget line on an identical chart.
Stella York, Essense of Australia and Martina Liana share one chart across three labels, so the same size fits consistently across all three — genuinely useful when comparing a romantic Essense against a minimalist Martina Liana. Morilee carries one of the widest ranges available, running to size 32.
David's Bridal is the most accessible brand and the only one here with dedicated W sizing alongside its standard chart. JJ's House is international, ships globally and accepts custom measurements, which makes it a common route for brides outside the US. Allure Bridals runs to 32 and shares its chart with the Allure Romance sub-line. Justin Alexander uses a consistent standard US chart, while Casablanca Bridal cuts slightly roomier through the waist than average. Extended plus ranges come from Stella York Plus (16W to 34) and Essense Plus (18W to 34).
Split sizes, and what boutiques do about them
A split size means your bust-driven size and your hip-driven size differ by two or more. It is extremely common and not a problem in itself — it is simply what happens when a body does not follow a single manufacturer's proportion ratio.
The standard solution is to order the larger size and have the smaller area taken in. That is a routine alteration rather than a major reconstruction, and it is the reason a good seamstress matters more than finding a brand with a perfect chart. If the spread is wide enough, a brand's custom sizing programme occasionally becomes the better route instead.
Measuring well, and switching to centimetres
Take measurements over the undergarments you plan to wear, keep the tape level and parallel to the floor, and have someone else hold it — a tape you are holding in place reads differently from one that sits naturally against the body. Measure in the afternoon rather than first thing in the morning, when bodies are at their smallest.
The unit toggle converts every field as you type, so you can work entirely in centimetres and still see which brand sizes come out. The underlying data is stored in inches, matching how essentially every bridal label publishes its chart.
Frequently asked questions
Why am I a bigger size in a wedding dress?
Because bridal charts use body measurements with construction allowance, while ready-to-wear uses garment measurements with ease already included. It is a different scale, not a verdict on you.
What should I do if I am between two sizes?
Round up. A gown can be taken in, but it generally cannot be let out, so the larger size carries considerably less risk.
What is a split size?
When your bust-driven size and your hip-driven size differ by two or more. The usual fix is ordering to the larger size and altering the smaller area down.
Which bridal brand runs smallest?
Vera Wang runs slightly smaller than the industry average, while Pronovias US equivalents run one to two sizes larger. Always check the individual brand's chart rather than assuming yours transfers.
Should I measure in inches or centimetres?
Either works. Bridal brands publish in inches, so inches avoids rounding, but the toggle converts everything in real time if centimetres is more familiar.
