What the elements actually take
Processional: 3–6 minutes with a wedding party, 2 minutes without. Add a minute for each pair and another for a large venue.
Welcome and opening remarks by the officiant: 2–4 minutes.
A reading: 2–3 minutes. A sonnet or a short passage is 90 seconds; a long prose excerpt is 4 minutes.
Second reading: 2–3 minutes if you have one.
Vows, traditional: 2–3 minutes. Vows, personal: 4–7 minutes for two people at 250–400 words each. Longer than that and the room's attention genuinely flags.
Ring exchange and the declaration: 2–3 minutes.
Kiss and presentation: 1 minute, plus however long the applause runs.
Recessional: 2–4 minutes. Nobody leaves quickly when they want to congratulate you.
Rituals — unity candle, sand, handfasting, wine box: 3–5 minutes each, and they frequently run long because they require props and coordination.

Civil or courthouse, no party: 10–15 minutes.
Short civil ceremony with a small party: 20–25 minutes.
Standard contemporary ceremony: 25–35 minutes. This covers the processional, a welcome, one reading, personal vows, rings and the recessional, and it is what most couples actually want.
Traditional religious ceremony with full rites: 45–75 minutes. A full mass runs 60–90 minutes, and the homily alone can be 15.
Ceremony with two or three rituals: add 10–15 minutes to the base.
For planning purposes, tell the venue and the photographer the upper number. A ceremony budgeted at 25 minutes that runs 38 is what pushes dinner service late by half an hour, and it happens at most weddings.
What makes a ceremony run long
The processional. Consistently underestimated. Eight attendants in pairs down a long aisle, with two grandmothers seated, takes five minutes, not two.
The officiant's homily. If your officiant is a friend or a family member, cap this explicitly and give them a time limit in writing. Guest officiants are the single largest cause of a ceremony running twenty minutes over.
Personal vows. Two people reading 600 words each with pauses for emotion is eight minutes. Beautiful, and it must be in the plan.
The microphone. The first minute of a poorly managed ceremony is usually spent on a mic that is too quiet, feeding back, or not switched on. Assign one person to own it and test it before guests sit down.
The heat, cold or wind. An outdoor ceremony in difficult conditions shortens at every point, because nobody wants to stand still. Budget for it and consider shortening the ceremony deliberately if the forecast is bad.
