Cake is priced by tier and decorated by eye, but it is eaten by portion. The Wedding Cake Serving Size Calculator converts your guest count and service plan into the number of servings you need, the tier count that delivers them, and a realistic cost, so you neither run short at the cutting table nor pay for a tier nobody eats.
How servings are counted
Wedding portions are smaller than party portions. A standard wedding serving is roughly 1 inch by 2 inches, which is why a 3-tier 6/8/10 cake serves around 80 people rather than 40. If your cake is also the dessert, expect guests to take a larger slice and reduce your count by about a fifth.
Tier geometry drives the total. A 6/8/10 inch round three-tier yields about 70 to 80 wedding servings. A 6/8/10/12 inch four-tier yields 130 to 150. A square tier adds roughly a quarter more servings than the same-diameter round.
Sheet cake closes the gap. Cutting a decorated tier to feed 200 guests leaves you with a lopsided cake. Order tiers for the photograph and a kitchen sheet cake at a fraction of the price per serving to make up the numbers.
Working numbers
50 guests, cake as the only dessert: a 6/8 inch two-tier plus a half sheet cake, about 70 servings total, $250–$450.
100 guests, cake plus a dessert table: a 6/8/10 three-tier, about 80 servings, with the dessert table covering the rest. $450–$850.
150 guests, cake as the centrepiece dessert: a 6/8/10/12 four-tier plus a full sheet cake in the kitchen, about 200 servings. $800–$1,600.
200+ guests: decorated tiers for display and sheet cake for service. Expect $3 to $7 per wedding serving for the decorated cake and $1.50 to $3 per serving for the sheet cake.
Decisions that change the number
Will guests take cake home? If you provide boxes, a meaningful share leaves uneaten and your servings need drop by roughly 15 percent.
Is there a groom's cake or a second dessert? Two desserts split the demand, so each can be sized for about 60 percent of the guest list.
Is the cake cut before or after dinner? Cake served immediately after the meal is eaten by nearly everyone. Cake served at 10pm after a dessert table has already been picked over goes largely untouched.
Order from a bakery that will quote per serving rather than per tier, and ask explicitly how many wedding servings each tier yields. That single question separates two quotes that look identical on paper but differ by 40 percent in what your guests actually receive.
Frequently asked questions
How many tiers do I need for 100 guests?
Three tiers, roughly 6/8/10 inches, gives about 80 wedding servings. Add a kitchen sheet cake to cover the remaining 20 to 30 portions cheaply.
How far in advance should I order the cake?
Three to six months for a peak-season Saturday. Some in-demand bakeries book out ten months ahead for summer dates.
Does the top tier have to be saved for the first anniversary?
It is tradition, not a rule. If you plan to save it, ask the bakery to wrap it for freezing properly — standard buttercream does not survive a year unwrapped.
What if I want a small cake for photos only?
Common and sensible at larger weddings. Order a two-tier display cake and serve sheet cake. Ask the photographer to shoot the cut before the plates go out.
